The merchants and ladies of court swore by a paste made from the sticky dregs of white wine and olive-oil, combed into the hair and activated by the sun. You could try similiar, should your search not prove fruitful.

The formula varies, and it rather depends on the color you start with. Anything much darker than a medium brown doesn't work so well. It begins to go an unnatural, dark orange.
