I'm sensing a fundamental misunderstanding. To me, your standard education is more akin to a college: a place for a small number of people to come and seek a great deal of knowledge. And yes, by definition, quite expensive, unless the college is a Circle of Magi.

I survived, I escaped, and with a number of marketable of skills, to boot. Many of the trainees did not. So I consider myself to have come out ahead in the long run.

uh yeah i guess so because colleges for us are where you go after you finish everything else. they're still pretty expensive and not everyone goes, but if you got something you wanna study or you got a job in mind, you go to a university and then they teach you more

you call them 'people'? i mean there's regular people and then there's the super rich assholes, but we outnumber them but a ton

Of course, they're people, everyone is a person. But what does everyone DO with all of this education? Who grows crops or breeds animals? Do the "super rich assholes" happen to have titles, because if so we just called them nobles.

There's quite a bit of information I'm lacking that seems to be required to understand how things worked on your world.

they still grow crops and breed animals, they just learn to do it better n' smarter and run it as a business, too
there are a lot of farmers and people who got money

and some of the assholes have titles
politicians, company presidents, shitty teachers
but not all of 'em are what you might call "nobles"
they're just people with power, sometimes with noble blood, usually just with a stick up their asses

the world i'm from is complicated - we got a lot of good things going for us like education and medicine and stuff
but we also have a lot of shitty people in it who take and take and still ain't satisfied
it ain't so different from other worlds i think

Mine was more like this one. Kings and nobility, merchants and scholars, physicians and alchemists. This world even has dragons, plague, prostitutes and political intrigue. All I'd need to really feel at home is a pair of holy armies breathing down people's necks and some fish chowder.

At least I have a lead on the fish chowder.
