Uh, hi.
[ can she have points for effort? the wave she gives is more uncertain than friendly, like she's not entirely comfortable addressing the entire network (she's not). she figures it'll work for everyone else the same way it does for her. when Emma has something to offer, she answers. when she doesn't, she leaves it to someone else.]
My name's Emma, and as a lot of you have already noticed, I'm new here.
[ she's been called out on it enough to know that it's obvious. some part of her still doubts everything here and it bleeds into conversation too easily. most people have been here long enough to accept this reality, but Emma's still thinking of home.]
I'm not gonna pretend that my first instinct wasn't to wallow in my disappointment until my family wakes up, but I know there's a lot to be done here. I've seen all of you getting things done here, and I just wondered... how have you been able to use the skills you learned in your home world to keep you busy in this one?
[ because it's time for her to think about taking on a job, and making a difference, and she's pretty sure that doesn't mean a sheriff's badge and a cruiser anymore. so far, she's been part of the clean-up effort, but she needs something else to get by on.]
Back home, I was the sheriff in a town called Storybrooke, Maine. Here, I don't know. How did you know where to start?

If it works out, great. If not, try something else.

[ he's right, she knows he is. maybe what she's looking for is less the job and more the chance to feel like she's doing something useful here. it's not that the job needs to stick, it's that this world is their only choice.]

But I can't imagine anyone would ever want any laws enforced.

[ and as someone who went from a life of crime to chasing criminals to formal law enforcement, maybe she has those, too.]
You can't imagine that here, or you can't imagine you would want any laws enforced?

{ it's hard to explain what a sheriff is when the actual concept and what it turned out to be are pretty far removed from each other.]
In Storybrooke, being the sheriff mostly meant protecting people. Enforcing laws, fighting anything or anyone dangerous when it came our way, things like that. Looking after the town.
[ being the savior.]

As for the rest, I see you've already heard it but I'd check with the local fuzz. I'm struggling with the change myself, working a bar at the moment while I figure Fantasyland out.

I've done a lot of traveling, but it was the only place that ever felt like home.
Yeah, I guess that's the obvious choice for me. What did you do back in your world?

For what it's worth? Hah - I've been here six months and I'm still figuring that out.
[ ..THAT'S NOT REASSURING. ]
I mean - don't sweat it if you don't land a gig you love right away. One nice thing about this place? There is a ton of jobs to choose from, and people are always lookin' for extra hands.
no subject
... well, she needs to find a job to get by, but aside from that, maybe it's not as big a deal as she made it out to be. coming off of being the savior, moving on is a little harder than she's willing to admit.]
You have a point, there are options.
[ but the options are a little different than what she's used to.]
I had to make my own steady work when I was a bailbondsperson, but it was different in Storybrooke. I learned to expect anything and the town always delivered.

Neither Olympia or Wyver seemed to have need of any of the skills I was raised for.
[ "lord" and "king" are, after all, rather narrow definitions. ]
Instead, I pursued employment that was relevant to what interested me.
[ for he had always been fond of his histories, military or otherwise. it also gave him the opportunity to learn about Wyver. ]

[ to be fair, there's also the magic she hasn't even mentioned as a possibility, but she feels more comfortable with a weapon she can hold in her hand than anything else. fighting is more her thing, and she's not sure that she trusts the magic here.]

[It's a rather abrupt answer, to be sure, but still. There's some merit in it.]
somehow, it's easier to put aside my own worries when there are others that need someone to do something. i might not be able to do it, but it's better than nothing. and i can't really stand by and do nothing, either.

I wouldn't worry too much about diving straight into things. There's a lot to see and a lot to learn and it can all be a little overwhelming at first. You find your pace soon enough.
[ Says the guy who made it his #Mission to figure out how to get involved on his literal first day here. ]
Talking to people - [ Like what she's doing! ] - is a good start, though. You get to see what someone else might be looking for, see if your skills are compatible.
no subject
You think we're allowed time to find our pace?
[ after they expected her to pilot a spacecraft, she's not so sure.]
Yeah, I figured it'd be easier to ask people who've been in the same position before I started asking around in Olympia.
