[ can she have points for effort? the wave she gives is more uncertain than friendly, like she's not entirely comfortable addressing the entire network (she's not). she figures it'll work for everyone else the same way it does for her. when Emma has something to offer, she answers. when she doesn't, she leaves it to someone else.]

My name's Emma, and as a lot of you have already noticed, I'm new here.

[ she's been called out on it enough to know that it's obvious. some part of her still doubts everything here and it bleeds into conversation too easily. most people have been here long enough to accept this reality, but Emma's still thinking of home.]

I'm not gonna pretend that my first instinct wasn't to wallow in my disappointment until my family wakes up, but I know there's a lot to be done here. I've seen all of you getting things done here, and I just wondered... how have you been able to use the skills you learned in your home world to keep you busy in this one?

[ because it's time for her to think about taking on a job, and making a difference, and she's pretty sure that doesn't mean a sheriff's badge and a cruiser anymore. so far, she's been part of the clean-up effort, but she needs something else to get by on.]

Back home, I was the sheriff in a town called Storybrooke, Maine. Here, I don't know. How did you know where to start?

I found something similar that seemed to need doing, even if it had a few parts that were different, and signed up to give it a shot. After all, jobs aren't forever.

If it works out, great. If not, try something else.

Well, the first step was to have widely applicable skills.

[ He frowns, rubbing his chin. ]

But I can't imagine anyone would ever want any laws enforced.

[sheriffing]

How's that working out for you so far?

[ he's right, she knows he is. maybe what she's looking for is less the job and more the chance to feel like she's doing something useful here. it's not that the job needs to stick, it's that this world is their only choice.]

I've found something not unlike what I'm used to, mostly by chance. I've no idea what a sheriff is but I'm certain something similar exists here.

[sheriffing]

Hey, I'm sure that helps.

[ and as someone who went from a life of crime to chasing criminals to formal law enforcement, maybe she has those, too.]

You can't imagine that here, or you can't imagine you would want any laws enforced?

[apricitous]

So far, so good.

I'm working at the dragon pens in Wyver.

I'm used to farm work. The dragons are new, but it's easier to get used to than you might think.

[vorrutyer]

[ His eyes narrow in amusement at her question, even as his face otherwise stays innocent. ]

Why - I can't imagine it at all. Aren't laws just such a drag?

[sheriffing]

What were you used to?

{ it's hard to explain what a sheriff is when the actual concept and what it turned out to be are pretty far removed from each other.]

In Storybrooke, being the sheriff mostly meant protecting people. Enforcing laws, fighting anything or anyone dangerous when it came our way, things like that. Looking after the town.

[ being the savior.]

[sheriffing]

I thought you were a newspaper reporter. Felt like a change of pace?

[ the dragons seem like they'd be the most intimidating part.]

That's pretty badass.

[sheriffing]

Some of them are.

[ some laws are stupid. most of them serve a purpose. in her time in Storybrooke, she saw both. Regina building the town from the ground up probably had something to do with that.]

Most of them are there to protect people. That's what mattered to me.

[vorrutyer]

Ah. Hm. Is that what will matter to you here, too?

[apricitous]

I am.

But I grew up on a farm. In a lot of ways, that's something from home I didn't lose.

And nothing quite like a dragon to put things in perspective.

[sheriffing]

It's still something I'd like to do.

[ ask her what else matters to her, and it's the people still sleeping in their pods; her parents, her son, his other mom, the pirate.

for a moment, she's quiet. trying to get an impression of him via video.]

What do you do here?

[vorrutyer]

[ Byerly smiles cheerily. The impression he gives is someone who's a bit of a ne'er-do-well, but good-natured enough. A bit droll, a bit ironic. ]

I work in a brothel.

[sheriffing]

My dad was the same way. No matter how his life changed, he never stopped being a farmer's son.

[ the past tense isn't entirely appropriate, but right now it is. she has to stop feeling like her family is going to wake up at any minute. odds are, it's gonna take some time.]

How do the dragons help you keep things in perspective?

[apricitous]

Well, it's sure not a cow, that's for certain.

But it's still an animal. It's new but it's not really new; you still have to muck and feed and water.

There's a lot of new to deal with but that doesn't mean who we are and what we know isn't good anymore. It just has to shift a little.

[sheriffing]

[ she shrugs, as if to admit she's yet to find herself in one of those. she doesn't remember seeing him around, but she gets the sense he's been here longer than she has. the same thing is true of most people here.]

Is that what you did at home?

Well bless my stars, with all the outer space cases flying around the last thing I thought I'd see was a true blue Maine girl. I used to live in Derry. I haven't heard of a Storybrooke before, was it close to Bangor? I was pretty little so the details are borderline misty.

As for the rest, I see you've already heard it but I'd check with the local fuzz. I'm struggling with the change myself, working a bar at the moment while I figure Fantasyland out.

No. At home I was a professional parasite.

[sheriffing]

And that means making the leap from cows to dragons?

[sheriffing]

That's not a profession.

[vorrutyer]

Why, of course it was. There's lawyers, after all. And me - I wasn't a lawyer, thank heaven. I merely sponged off those who were richer than I, and better-positioned than I. The privilege of nobility.

I saw there were notices about the city, asking for volunteers to the Royal Guard. I only know how to swing a sword, so it seemed the better choice. I think others choose based on their skills or former occupations.

[sheriffing]

It was off in the middle of nowhere, yet somehow still on the coast. A small, off-the-map little town. Mostly people who'd relocated from other places.

I've done a lot of traveling, but it was the only place that ever felt like home.

Yeah, I guess that's the obvious choice for me. What did you do back in your world?

[sheriffing]

That kind of parasite, huh?

[ it's the thief in her that still thinks, well, if they were that rich, it's not like they missed it...]

Not as easy to manage that with everyone starting over here.
