Uh, hi.

[ can she have points for effort? the wave she gives is more uncertain than friendly, like she's not entirely comfortable addressing the entire network (she's not). she figures it'll work for everyone else the same way it does for her. when Emma has something to offer, she answers. when she doesn't, she leaves it to someone else.]

My name's Emma, and as a lot of you have already noticed, I'm new here.

[ she's been called out on it enough to know that it's obvious. some part of her still doubts everything here and it bleeds into conversation too easily. most people have been here long enough to accept this reality, but Emma's still thinking of home.]

I'm not gonna pretend that my first instinct wasn't to wallow in my disappointment until my family wakes up, but I know there's a lot to be done here. I've seen all of you getting things done here, and I just wondered... how have you been able to use the skills you learned in your home world to keep you busy in this one?

[ because it's time for her to think about taking on a job, and making a difference, and she's pretty sure that doesn't mean a sheriff's badge and a cruiser anymore. so far, she's been part of the clean-up effort, but she needs something else to get by on.]

Back home, I was the sheriff in a town called Storybrooke, Maine. Here, I don't know. How did you know where to start?

I found something similar that seemed to need doing, even if it had a few parts that were different, and signed up to give it a shot. After all, jobs aren't forever.

If it works out, great. If not, try something else.

Well, the first step was to have widely applicable skills.

But I can't imagine anyone would ever want any laws enforced.

I've found something not unlike what I'm used to, mostly by chance. I've no idea what a sheriff is but I'm certain something similar exists here.

Well bless my stars, with all the outer space cases flying around the last thing I thought I'd see was a true blue Maine girl. I used to live in Derry. I haven't heard of a Storybrooke before, was it close to Bangor? I was pretty little so the details are borderline misty.

As for the rest, I see you've already heard it but I'd check with the local fuzz. I'm struggling with the change myself, working a bar at the moment while I figure Fantasyland out.

I saw there were notices about the city, asking for volunteers to the Royal Guard. I only know how to swing a sword, so it seemed the better choice. I think others choose based on their skills or former occupations.

I just looked through the job notices and went with something I had experience with doing back home.

[ Hey, it takes guts to address everyone like this - he can respect that. Which is more of the reason he answers, rather than he has any great insight. But this question is one he's asked himself a lot, especially lately. Maybe...he might actually be able to say something that'll help, too. ]

For what it's worth? Hah - I've been here six months and I'm still figuring that out.

I mean - don't sweat it if you don't land a gig you love right away. One nice thing about this place? There is a ton of jobs to choose from, and people are always lookin' for extra hands.

Neither Olympia or Wyver seemed to have need of any of the skills I was raised for.

[ "lord" and "king" are, after all, rather narrow definitions. ]

Instead, I pursued employment that was relevant to what interested me.

Well, I'm sure someone's mentioned the Royal Guard in Olympia by now — which would certainly suit, given your previous occupation.

[ Although she does know some people who decided against joining the Guard even with the appropriate skill set. She understands the wariness; she's a member, but she keeps an eye out. ]

there were people who were just as lost as i was. they needed help.

[It's a rather abrupt answer, to be sure, but still. There's some merit in it.]

somehow, it's easier to put aside my own worries when there are others that need someone to do something. i might not be able to do it, but it's better than nothing. and i can't really stand by and do nothing, either.

I wouldn't worry too much about diving straight into things. There's a lot to see and a lot to learn and it can all be a little overwhelming at first. You find your pace soon enough.

Talking to people - [ Like what she's doing! ] - is a good start, though. You get to see what someone else might be looking for, see if your skills are compatible.

All I can do is fight, so I found a place that let me.

I'm pretty new myself, but I'm a private eye back home. I figure I'll do the same around here.

I knew a sheriff once. She was kind of awful.
