The gun allows for long-range combat, but swords require closer proximity. Perhaps there could be an opening for you to get closer, but that would largely depend upon how much time there is between each discharge. That would vary by gun.

If you do that, I would check with the Natha before the natives. Leather and certain metals won't offer much protection at all. Invest in headgear as well. If you have access to a weapon other than a sword, I'd consider using that instead, too.
