Sooo a while back I put in a little bit of a request with our alien overlord hosts. And shockingly enough it not only came through, it was actually what I asked for! Crazy right? Turns out good things happen to not-so-great people after all, which, obviously I don't mean me. I'm amazing.

Anyway what I got was this really awesome game from back home called "Bunkers & Badasses". So awesome in fact that there's still a copy of it even after the universe was destroyed which I feel is pretty indicative of the sheer levels of awesomeness we're dealing with here.

I don't know if any of you guys had tabletop back home but basically you create a character by choosing your fantasy race and class, and then you go on adventures and roll a bunch of dice! Bunker Teams are best in groups of four but being the utterly amazing Bunker Master I am, I'm willing to accommodate anyone who's interested in playing through a short campaign or two. The rules aren't too hard and making a character is easy.

I'm thinking maybe in the next two weeks or so? Let me know if you're interested or have any questions.

Oh hey Mantis! For sure! Do you want me to go over the rules or anything with you? I can help you roll up a character too.

Hello Rhys! I would like it, please, if you would? Are we telling a story together? Is that what that means? [Because 'characters' are in stories; she knows that much.]

It's sort of like that, yeah! I'll describe people and stuff and events to you guys and you guys tell me what you want to try and do. Then we roll a bunch of dice and see how things play out.

Oh. Okay. What do the dice do?

The number you roll determines how successful your character is in what they want to do! So if you roll a 20 that's the best possible outcome, and a 1 would be the absolute worst.

So the dice help you tell the story, I suppose.

[A pause, because this requires much aforethought, and then:] For example, my character wants to make a sandwich. I would roll the dice for that? If I roll a 1, my character drops all the ingredients and cannot make a sandwich. If I roll a 20, it is the best sandwich ever made? Is that how it works?

[At least she knows what dice are?]

That's...a very simplified way of describing it, but yeah! I woudn't make you roll for putting a sandwich together though. It's usually stuff like convincing someone to do something for you, lying, or fighting monsters.

[ Rhys is very proud of her C: She's actually catching on faster than some people who still struggle with the idea that their character does not need to be them exactly ]

[Mantis has memories of indulging in fantastical imaginings while growing up on Ego's planet; for a young girl with no one (but a god who may or may not have time for her) around, telling stories was a grand and noble escape and pastime.

This appeals to her.]

Oh, okay! That makes sense, I think. We are all telling the story together, so if we all roll the dice, it makes it fair, right?

Exactly! It's a little different for me since I'll be the Bunker Master but that's essentially it. You guys are the main characters and I handle the setting, NPCs, and monsters.

[ In a way he's the one with the most control, technically, but controlling all of that and not giving the players a chance to drive the story isn't very good Bunker Mastering. ]

I think that makes sense. Our characters tell the story in the context that you have given us. All right.

But what are NPCs?

Non-player characters. Basically all the townsfolk and creatures you guys run into that aren't each other. I'll be playing them for you!

Oh! Background characters? And creatures and monsters, right? Every story must have conflict.

[They're boring otherwise. Her grand imagined adventures usually involved escaping Ego somehow. Lots of conflict there.]

Exactly! Man you really get this stuff huh? Are you sure you've never played before?

[ Because she is either a natural or has dabbled or watched someone dabble before, he swears. If only Giovanni could catch on this quickly... ]

Oh, no, not at all. But I used to tell myself so many stories when I was young and alone. When I told my master that I made up stories, he started giving me books sometimes. I think I read all of them many times over. There were a couple of them that kind of sounded like what you are telling me about.

Your...master? Were you like a student or something?

[ Please tell him "master" is just part of alien bug culture and not some weird slavery thing, that would make this infinitely more awkward ]

It's hard to see a cringe over text, but there's a definite pause. She forgot not to use that 'master' word again. It makes people uncomfortable, she's noticed.]

I think that I was more akin to a pet.

There is no reason for you to be sorry. I apologize. I have seen that it makes people uncomfortable and I forgot to censor myself. I need to be better about that.

Yes, it did suck but I am free now and that is good enough.

[ Oh well that's...good. It's probably not that good that he's more relieved that it makes the conversation easier than it is than the fact that she managed to become free for her own sake, though. ]

Why not? Anyone who keeps someone else as a "pet" is pretty gross in my books. Glad you're okay now Mantis.

[ That he can be sincere about at least. She seemed genuinely nice, which is more than he can say about himself. She doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. ]

A guy like that? I'm not too worried what he thinks. He deserves to be taken down a peg or two.
