It's my fifty-first birthday this weekend. Do I win the award for most elderly amongst us refugees?

It's hard to believe I was in my late twenties when I first came to Olympia. Stasis is... strange, to say the least, but I'm sure any of us here for an amount of time realize that.

But, cheery or not, he does have the good grace to look at bit sheepish at his slip up being caught out. Best to skip over it and move on? You bet.]

I certainly hope not. After your mid-twenties, birthdays don't feel that special. Or at least for me, that's how it was.

They might not feel special, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t y’know. And there’s presents too, and cake, and there’s never a bad excuse to have cake! And I bet your friends will want to make you feel special too.

The best present I could ask for is my family spending time with me. If there's cake, I wouldn't be opposed, but there doesn't need to be a big fuss.

I do enjoy setting up birthday parties, however. So I do understand.

I guess that makes sense. If you're celebrating, then spending the day with the people you care about the most's the best way to do that. Are all your family awake down here with you?

Not all. But I'm lucky enough to have my children. My husband's been awake before, but he hasn't returned.
