Ah... I didn't really patronize drinking establishments back on earth, either.
So I'm not very well versed in anything of the sort.

It's like a much more socially beneficial potions class, I think.

It's so odd for me to consider that a place like that exists. But you're not the only one to whom magic was a fiction.

For centuries, my family's specialty has been restorative magic-- healing, breaking curses, and the like.

I don't see why you couldn't.
A dear friend of mine came from a commoner (that is, non-magical) background.
She struggled for some time, but she was eventually able to learn most of what I can do.

but i guess in others it's more about the words and stuff...

Where I'm from, every person has magical potential. It can take time to learn how to harness that into magic itself. It isn't just saying the words.
The inherent advantage of people born into magical families isn't genetic, it's that we're around magic and those who use it our entire lives. Children in magical families pick it up as they might learn a foreign language spoken in the home.

I do know that people here have been given powers that they never had back in their homes. Which makes me wonder if it's perhaps possible.
