A Public Service Announcement:
Star-Lord is the handsomest, funniest, most modest guy around with the sweetest singing voice and the sickest dance moves. It’s an absolute privilege and delight to call him a friend. My days are enriched for knowing him and fuller for speaking with him.
Everyone adores him. They think he’s a righteous dude.
P.S. – Gamora, you shouldn’t leave your comm lying around unlocked. xoxo Star-Lord

[ she sounds about 50% judging, 50% terribly amused. ]

[ And the word comes out sharply, dismissively. ]
What, exactly, has Rocket been telling you about me?
no subject
[ considering it's Rocket, all these things seem... actually not that bad. ]
no subject
... Is that really all?
[ because Peter knows all about Rocket’s tendency to add his own brand of color commentary. ]

[ there's a faint edge to her voice — because believe it or not... Rocket's mentioned his teammates on several occasions, rarely by name, but she's always been able to hear the fond tone behind his gruff words. and to her, that is what really matters. ]

[ And he says it lightly, and while the shrug goes unseen, it’s implied in his voice. Everyone is a liar until they prove otherwise. It’s just how Peter operates.
He has Issues. ]
Listen. I don’t mean to be rude. [ —SOUNDS FAKE, QUILL. ] It’s just that I know how Rocket talks about me to my face. I can only imagine how he probably talks about me behind my back.
no subject
[ perhaps not the reaction he was expecting, but... it's how she operates, too. we're all liars here, she'd been told, and though this wasn't King's Landing, she had no reason to expect otherwise. being prepared for the worst has served her well. ]
... though perhaps not that smart. Have you ever considered that maybe he only talks badly about you to your face because that is how he is? My sister would throw food at me and laugh at me, and sometimes I wondered if she didn't just hate me entirely, but I know now that she cares about me, about our family, enough to kill for me if I asked her to. She's just never been one to say it outright.
[ and isn't Rocket like that, too? gruff and angry and passive-aggressive and scared of just how much he really cares. ]
no subject
He does, at the very least, listen without interrupting her, and while that does make sense, Peter is still a suspicious bastard. He relents, though; this is dirty laundry that doesn't need airing on a public network. ]
You ever considered writing for after school specials? You seem like a natural.

[ it's flatly said, though clearly not because of any annoyance directed at him, and rather at the fact that her background limits her knowledge once more. ]

It was a thing when I was a kid. They were supposed to help teach important life lessons, like not to do drugs, or to be respectful of your parents, or not to accept candy from strangers and hop into highly suspicious vans. Stuff like that.
no subject
[ the rest she can sort of understand: drugs are medicine, right, and no one should take medicine unless they're sick, and being respectful of your parents is a given. she's not quite sure why accepting candy from strangers is a bad thing, though she supposes they could be trying to poison them instead, in which case it's certainly a good idea to avoid eating anything you don't know the origin of. ]

They're forms of, um. Automobiles? [ ... if she doesn't know what a van is, she probably doesn't know what an "automobile" is, so he switches gears. ] A kind of transportation, where I was from.
They're not suspicious by themselves, usually, but sometimes the people who drive them can be, like, really shady. So, you know, you don't wanna hop in with 'em in case they kidnap you.
no subject
Oh, I know of those! I was told they're like a horse carriage, but ones that move without the horses.
[ she's so delighted she knows something relevant to the conversation! though her delight changes into grim understanding very quickly, because, oh, the explanation actually makes a lot of sense. ]
I see... that's true. Everywhere in the world they hurt people who shouldn't be hurt. Trusting strangers is just naive.

When I was a kid, we had a lot of school assemblies. Teacher and parents were always telling us not to talk to strangers or accept food or drink from random dudes on the street. Junk like that.
[ stranger danger!!! ]
no subject
[ also smart. ]
Perhaps you're the one who should be writing those after school specials.
