[It's been a rough couple of days. Something in Venom's personal life exploded in his face, so he hasn't been sleeping much. He took a little time off work, and tonight he's decided to film the little egg that showed up a while ago. Call it proof in case something goes horribly wrong. Maybe it'll even hatch on camera and he can share what arrived. That might cheer him up. Possibly. Maybe.

What he doesn't expect is finding shards of eggshell in the box he kept it.

Panicked, he films the path of shell pieces into his kitchen, where a very tiny monkey has started devouring some fruit on the table. Of course that begs the question:]

Sorry to ask so late, but what kind of monkey is this?

And monkeys don't hatch from eggs...

[Oh. So that's what was in the egg. That answers the first question.]

Neither do tigers. But I doubt Daifuku ever got into Atsushi's lilnberries.

[You know what? Bugger this phone for a lark, he's putting down his book and heads to the kitchen with his long-empty coffee cup. Hi, roomie. Zev's staring at your pet. The monkey blinks up at him, mouth smacking as it chews, and then goes back to eating like they're not even standing there.]

...You'd think he'd at least wait a while.

He was probably hungry and decided to find food. Still, he managed to escape from the box on his own.

[Do all animals hatch from eggs here?? Venom approaches the small primate, putting his hand out.]

Welcome. This is your home.

[Once the monkey finishes his berry, he climbs right up onto Venom's palm and takes a seat.]

Ah, well... I can't say you aren't cute.

[There are tiny, sticky handprints on the counter. It's weirdly endearing. Zevran takes a moment to watch the creature, wondering how it already knew his roommate was a friend.]

He does have his charms. And at least we know what he eats.

[There's a long pause while he watches the monkey lick its paws clean.]

...I suppose you should name him.

We'll have to keep plenty of fruit for him.

[The monkey keeps staring at both of them, but that's it. No acting out, just sitting there on Venom's palm.]

I'm open to suggestions.

[He considers Zato, but it doesn't seem to suit him...]

[Dude no, Zev's just as useless at naming animals as you are. No offense.]

Ah...As far as I know, pets are usually named after some quality they possess or a person their owner knew. The Warden's hound was named after a distant relative, as I recall.

[He trails off and becomes quiet for a long moment, thinking as the messages start to come in. He smiles as a thought occurs to him, speaking quietly as though in an aside to himself.]

Hunched up like that, he looks a bit like a bell pepper. Almost the right color, too.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about my family.

[Other than his assassin "family". And no, he won't be naming the monkey 2cave.]

He kind of does look like a bell pepper.

Hmmm... Pepper...

[He chuckles.]

We'll keep that as Plan B, perhaps.

[Yes, he's totally assuming that someone else will find a better one.]

I've never seen anything quite like it. It's probably a species native here. [ Not that she would know much about wildlife, though!! ]

It's quite adorable. Where did you find the egg?

The egg appeared just over a week ago. I didn't know what to do, so I had to research caring for eggs and followed some instructions.

If it is native, I'll have to find out more about it. So far, it clearly seems to enjoy fruit.

I've heard about these eggs just appearing. I wonder if it's some sort of gift from the Natha.

[ She can talk about the Natha with a fellow refugee, right? It doesn't look like the natives have access to these lines. ]

Possibly. But I wonder what inspired them to give me a small monkey.

[Just as the monkey decides to crawl all over him and leave a couple of berry-colored prints on his clothes.]

[For something good he did, but he wouldn't know what. The monkey continues to crawl and make cute noises.]

I suppose I should give him a name, too.

Is that a monkey?

[he's seen a few, perched on street organ-grinders' shoulders and the like. But never really up close - he's watching the screen with open fascination before he catches himself.]

Ah - so far as I know, no, they do not. Neither do "llamas".

[and yet here, he has one, albeit in miniature - hatched right out of an egg herself last month. He moves the camera over to her briefly - all of three feet tall and delighted by the attention Lula comes trotting over to lay her head on his knee, making a delighted sound when Linneus pets her. A soft trickle of laughter before he turns the camera back on himself]

Curious additions aside, have you been well, Venom?

A very small monkey, yes.

[He watches Linneus pan over to the llama, who is very happy with the pets she was getting from her owner. So apparently many animals do hatch from eggs here.]

I... this monkey is probably the only ray of happiness I've seen in a while.

[And the little guy seems to sense this as he's crawling up on Venom so he can perch on his shoulder.]

[there's a little gasp as he watches the monkey climb. Linneus is hardly the type to squeal but that is adorable]

Very small. I'm told Lula is quite small for her species as well.

[Uff. Someone's name was mentioned and he reaches down to scratch at her neck while he listens to Venom talk]

I'm sorry to hear that. [softly, a little downcast] Is it anything talking about it might help, or just...?

[a little gesture of his hand. Just. The atmosphere everywhere has been terrible, and even if there has been an effort toward normalcy of late... it doesn't erase anything that was done.]

At the moment, no. I won't be good company for a while. I just wanted to share this and hope to find some joy.

It was partially successful, I think.

[Not only with the monkey and his infinite cuteness, but also talking to Linneus.]

I doubt that a little... [Venom's assessment of whether he would be good company. Linneus has seen a lot of people at their worst. People just need space sometimes, though.] But as you feel, of course. He - he? - will help in lifting your spirits, I hope.

[animals are good like that, if one doesn't want human company.]

[Venom hasn't checked to make sure. He gives the monkey a light scritch on his chin, noting the happy noises he makes.]

I haven't. I'm still reeling on him hatching in the first place.

And it appears you're correct. Another said they received a llama in an egg. Have you received an egg, as well?

I have, yeah. But the ferret that came out of mine is tame compared to hippo someone else got.

[Now he's a little more thankful for the tiny monkey, who has gotten prints all over his sleeve.]

I don't know what I'd do if I received a hippo in an egg...

Any news on the monkey front?

All I've learned is that he's newly hatched, about six inches long, attacked our fruit bowl for the berries, and he's quite well behaved otherwise.
