How come I have to have a "silver turd" and a "blind dude" as roommates? They both suck!
Who came up with this idea? This is stupid.

Might kick them out. They're too noisy.

Does anyone even like their roommates? Mine are annoying. Let's do a trade.

This is what my brother Rhaegar would have done had he lived, is it not? I can do no less; and the offer will remain, should you change your mind.

( It may come to pass that she will press the issue if these petty squabbles become too disruptive. She'd not mentioned Viserys, and will pointedly refrain from doing so. His is no example she would follow. )

What is this long night you refer to?

Forgive me - I know not what your brother would have done to intervene in the name of peace. His mark upon our histories as the North knows him was to start a long and bloody war by running away with aunt.

[ Harsh, perhaps, but true enough. They may yet have much to learn from one another, and historical revisions could lay in store. ]

The Winter as you, nor none in the Southern realms, have never known it, Your Grace.
It was upon us not long before The Storm came to take us all.

The knights in my service left that part out. How did that happen? Ser Barristan said he'd never known a finer man, and Ser Jorah called him noble. I would like to ask your forgiveness for all the wrong done unto your House by mine.

If I can lend aid to ease things between yourself and Theon Greyjoy, I will. Otherwise, I leave the matter to you.

( Harsh and blunt, but then, she's only ever been told of the whole of her father's exploits. And only recently. Rhaegar's life has been a mystery to her from the first.

As the concept of anything but blisteringly hot days and freezing nights has been. )

I see. What did winter in our homeland entail?

Ser Barristan served your family true, Your Grace. From what legends they sing of his honor and exploits, I should be surprised to hear him speak ill of your brother, no matter the circumstance. All I know of Ser Jorah is that he was cast out of House Mormont; his words are none I could vouch for. I have only the education my father and Maester Luwin gave us all - and the fact that my Aunt Lyanna was taken from the world before I could meet her, once Prince Rhaegar was done with her.

[ Robb is not making the situation better. Decidedly so. But the stirring up of bitter memories amidst a flurry of recent trauma leaves him feeling more exposed. A wolf's hackles raise when cornered, do they not. ]

...None of it was your doing, however. You do not need my forgiveness. What may serve you, instead, is patience on the matter of allegiance - I did not agree to be rescued from The Storm only to be embroiled in another war over whose knee bends to whom.

As for the winter... my siblings and I had yet to see it. It comes perhaps once a generation. But with it, they say, and so says my brother: the Night King and all the dead who follow him.

shhh i didn't notice

He did, from the first until the last. It aggrieves me still, but he was lost while defending the people of Meereen and myself. I had no formal education, and so I must depend upon second-hand accounts passed on to me by others. Does anyone know for certain, the circumstances involving this incident between him and your aunt? It seems we have some unfortunate things in common, my lord.

( She is sorry for it, deep down. But she will never think ill of her eldest brother by default, unless presented with undeniable proof of his misdeeds. If Robb should insist here, he will find a dragon's hackles can be raised, too. )

The wrongs had to be acknowledged; I thank you for not holding me to account for them. I don't intend to start a war here unless it is necessary. Indulge me: what would you do to a bannerman who refused to swear their allegiance to you?

( She's not threatening him - much. So much as testing him and sussing out just what manner of ruler he paints himself to be. )

That does little to clarify the concept for me, you know.

[ The conversation eventually becomes too much for him to convey over this new form of technology.
His hands are tired; his heart is tired. After a deep breath, he clicks the control to engage Video Chat. Will she accept?

( The buttons indicate what function goes with what, she remembers. She also recalls what an amazing thing it is to see who she is speaking to. What actually surprises her, then, is the request itself.

Dany finds she wouldn't mind seeing him again at all, and finally presses 'accept.' When his image appears, she inclines her head in greeting. )

Hello.

[ Posture straight, shoulders back. Circles under his eyes. He is a study in contradictions now just as much as he likely was over text. One can almost see the weight in the shape of a circlet around his head.

This head, he, too, bows in salutation.
]

Thank you for accepting a more direct audience with me, such as it is. I have not seen you since we first arrived at the West Outpost.

[ He has the grace not to color at the recollection of it. He'd been in the midst of disrobing when she'd entered his room by accident, after all. ]

don't blame her for being a flirt ok

( His posture is a match for hers, as she sits primly before her device. She appears only a trifle tired in comparison to him, and despite herself, concern lingers in her eyes.

She's found that she can empathize with him much more than she'd bargained for. )

It's a pleasure to see the King in the North again. Things have been somewhat complicated since.

( For them both, apparently. She smiles a little. That's a sight she won't soon forget; he's beautiful. )

Would that circumstances were easier for you at this time.

[ Funny, to think they both view that night as much simpler than much else they've faced. At another time, in another place, a memory like theirs would have remained at the forefront of his mind.

At this realization, he is at last able to present her with a true, if muted, smile — two fold: for the irony, and for her graciousness. The hard lines around his eyes blur out, just a bit.
]

And the Dragon Queen. Aye... rooming with he who saw my home burned to cinders after growing up there beside me... I fear I've complicated the lives of many in my unbridled anger, yourself included.

You have made great efforts to soothe the fury this night, and do not doubt my gratitude. But I would not entangle you further into this bloody business, Your Grace.

I would, however, speak of winter with you, should you wish it.

[personal profile] jelmazmo 2017-08-19 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
( For her, it is a far sweeter memory than many she's made since awakening aboard Thesa station. She will remember, even if more unpleasant things have drawn their attention of late.

Dany's smile remains, though faint. When his features soften that way, he looks years younger. Not much apart from her in age, in all likelihood. )

It was a mistake to discuss it before strangers, but I well understand your pain. I was betrayed, more than once. One day I hope you may heal from it.

( She watches him a long moment, and then sighs, nodding her head. ) You haven't troubled me with it, but it is a personal matter. Very well.

Please do. I would like to learn more about our homeland.

[ He sets down the device so that he might fold his arms over his table, relaxing his posture.
Letting one wall down before her.
]

Maester Luwin — he served our house long and well — taught us of the Long Night. But even Northern children who have never seen a true winter will be reluctant to believe in what seem little more than bedtime stories. The Night King is a legend thousands of years old, and a legend he remained to us.

[ Here, Robb frowns down at his hands, thinking back to an ominous conversation he'd had with Jon. ]

To all but my brother Jon. He joined the Night's Watch at Castle Black... ventured north of the Wall. He set eyes upon the Night King, and his army of the dead.

[ Peering quietly up at Daenerys. ]

They were men, once, Your Grace. So Jon witnessed. Men who died, and became something... other. He says that now, if you die near the Wall, your body must be burned — or you become one of them.

[personal profile] jelmazmo 2017-08-19 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
( What he goes on to describe sends an icy chill creeping down her spine, tendrils of it sinking deep into her bones. Surely, his brother must has exaggerated.

It takes a long moment for her to reciprocate the courtesy, and place her device away from herself; and clasp her hands tightly in her lap. )

It does sound fantastical. Were you not an honest man, I would be inclined to dismiss that possibility outright. But—you have been. And I hatched my dragons from petrified stone.

( She considers, carefully; this brother is someone she knows not well, nor cares for particularly at all. )

I see. ( She inhales deeply, tightening the grasp she has on her hands. ) And so you tell me I may have faced them when I finally returned home?

If dragons can exist, then I suppose so might these abominations. Let us hope none of their number survived the storm.
