I'd suggest my Christmas gift to you but I'd meant for that to be enjoyed under better circumstances. For what it's worth, I am sorry. Mr Gently and I only just met at the gala but he left quite the impression.

[ A good one, she should say, but she knows John has known the man longer than her. She supposes it needn't be said. Peggy herself is especially particular about who she keeps as company and she and Dirk had a lovely, long chat on the balcony of the South Outpost.

Being on the outside of a grief or anger that doesn't quite touch you is — strange, awkward sometimes. When Bucky had been (presumably) killed in action, she'd tried her best to be there for Steve even if the other soldier was more his friend than hers (what's a year or two in combat compared to a childhood?). That doesn't lessen the hardship.

There's a minute of nothing before she sends her next message, an echo of his from a few weeks ago: ]

John holds his breath for a second, then releases it through the shape of a weary smile. alright, Peggy Carter. alright. ]

Did you see him with or without the Christmas jumper?

No jumper to speak of. No jacket, for that matter, even though we were out on the balcony. I don't think either of us expected the company but it was nice.
