Rodney fears the loss of his intelligence, which is one of the pillars of his self-image. If that goes, he goes to pieces with it. He's also anxious about John dying (horribly or otherwise), of not being good enough or talented enough to keep everyone alive in this situation or any other (since that is literally his job), and the idea that he's wasting time that he could be becoming...superman maybe? Possibly batman? It's an irrational fear that if he misses an instant not trying to fix the current horror that he's going to be the one to cause it to all fall apart.
