What would you die for?


[There's no preamble. Enjolras is not in the mood to set the scene. He's been thinking and gotten nowhere so he wants the input of others. Over his shoulder it's apparent his room a shambles, a young man living alone with his mind on things other than housekeeping.]

For myself there's a cause that I've given all my life to. It's the highest ideal I can imagine. I know that is not a usual thing. Life is precious; until I woke up here I'd have said that death precluded any second chances at it. But that's beside the point.

I ask because I thought I others shared my opinions. It is rational to give your life only for the most important ideal. Sacrificing yourself for just anything- to get any item or even for another person... [His lips pinch together in thought, his eyes look distant for a moment.] I have not been able to reconcile it.

[A quick sigh escapes him, frustrated.]

I would appreciate your sincere answers and insights. Thank you.

[Honestly, Law’s so used to being judged, much of it intentionally garnered on his part, that if he recognizes it in the man’s tone, it doesn’t phase him. But yeah, when you say it like that it sounds kind of silly, doesn’t it.]

It wasn’t like I was going out of the way to get myself killed. It just seemed like the only way to do what I had to do wasn’t survivable. Things went.... differently than I planned, so I ended up surviving.
[His plan went sideways, and he survived. Really weird nonsense.]

What is it you wanted to do? That is, if you do not mind the question? [The second part of that question is tacked on after a slightly too long a pause. Manners are not the priority here, even if custom dictates Enjolras use them.]

[He considers saying that yes, he does mind, but maybe it'd do him some good to unpack some of this to a random strange in a semi-anonymous fashion. Such is Law's reasoning for always choosing audio over video.]

It's complicated. Essentially, the man I needed to stop had a lot of power and influence, so I had to create a rather roundabout method for him to be killed that didn't hinge on my survival.

[A pause.]
If you want more detail than that there's a lot of thing about pirates and their politics that I'd need to explain.

What kind of man was he? [Enjolras can guess, but he's finding it easier to ask for more detail.] Men may have power and influence and use them to benefit others.

[Law's quiet for a long moment as he thinks about how best to describe the sort of man Donquixote Doflamingo was. There's a lot of things he could say, but this guy doesn't need to hear all of it.]
He's the sort of man who'll call you "family" as long as you're useful to him. The second you aren't, he'll snuff you out without a second thought. He's a hateful, angry person who'll lie, cheat, and steal to get what he wants, which is rarely anything good.

[Those are the basics, he thinks.]

[A grim, approving look settles on Enjolras' face.] Not a man to be trusted with power. Did you succeed?

[kikoku]

[That's weirdly a somewhat complicated question.]

I don't know if I can... personally claim to have succeeded.
[Partly because he spent a great deal of the plan being some manner of incapacitated.]

But we as a group managed to, somehow. The important thing is that Doflamingo's been put in prison.

[The approving look continues and Enjolras nods. Good.]

If the group succeeds I would count that as a success for you as well. If I had died and my friends lived to accomplish our goals, I would have counted that as success for myself.

[Visible approval is a weird and foreign concept to Law!]

... I suppose. I hadn't exactly planned for this alliance to continue as long as it has now, though. This other crew's captain... operates differently than most people.
[Law isn't sure he'll ever be free of this "temporary" alliance.]

[Ever interested in how different groups and systems operate, Enjolras looks intruiged.] "differently than most people"? How so?

... As in he's an idiot. He thinks my alliance was an offer of friendship. When I tried to call it off, he just refused. Once he's decided he's doing something, he can't really be talked out of it.
[It's very tiring, even if Luffy's generally well intentioned.]
