Voice; un: mai

Is it just me or are things starting to get a little unpleasant around here?

[She sighs out some. Not that she hadn't expected Olympia and Wyver to start not getting along again of course but it's still pretty annoying.]

I've been outright ignored in a few places in Olympia. Don't ask me exactly what I did to get that kind of treatment because I don't have a clue.

[Now to the meat of why she's drifted onto the network after having not touched it for this long. Her tone actually sounds pretty curious.]

Have any of the rest of you run into anything? Olympia, Wyver, wherever.

I don't usually negotiate with idiots.

[The words drop out bluntly and blandly. She pauses a moment after them to add:]

I tried a few different places. After I figured out it was more than one person doing it, I just went back to Wyver. I don't have the energy to argue with people like that.

[ 76 can understand having no tolerance for people, though he also figures that there can be something to learn even from "idiots." On the other hand, not having the energy to argue is also fair. ]

Can't really blame you. I haven't even made an attempt to go back to Olympia. Pretty sure my welcome would be less-than-warm.

[ Given that he's probably still considered a fugitive there. ]

Did you do something?

[She's just curious really.]

[ It's not unreasonable for Mai not to know, given that she's only got his voice to judge by, but 76 didn't expect such a straightforward question. ]

I was one of the people thrown under the bus when that virus got released.

[Ooooh. Mai didn't know exactly who had been on that blame list other than she was apparently not one of them. And at that point in time that's all that really mattered to her, given her lack of connections with the people around her.]

Better off without them then... not that that exactly makes it any easier, I guess.

[ Given that Olympia had never really been home anyway, it's not the worst thing that could have happened. It does block him off from a significant portion of this world, but Wyver's got plenty going for it, not to mention the station. ]

It just means there's really no decision to be made, as far as where to settle down.

[ Wyver's more his speed anyway. ]

That's true. I was probably going to end up in Wyver anyhow.

Why's that?

[ Everyone has their reasons for the choice they made, but now he's curious. ]

... Nostalgia, in a way. It's a lot like where I'm from.

[Maybe it sounds like a stupid motivator but for someone who doesn't give a damn about Olympia and Wyver's conflict alongside being more than a little homesick, it seems like a decent idea.]

[ It doesn't seem stupid at all. With everything they knew gone, it only makes sense to settle in somewhere you feel comfortable. Now he's got a thread to pull on, though. ]

How so?

The color scheme, the level of pride they have in themselves. Not that the pride is necessarily a good thing but there was a lot of that back at home too. We had stories of dragons too, though they were all gone by the time I was born. Seeing them here is sort of like seeing the past.

Dragons were pretty much only in stories where I'm from.

[ 76 isn't going to count spirit dragons, just for the sake of simplicity. ]

But yeah, that amount of pride is the kind of thing that can get people into trouble. I'm guessing the Wyver people won't take kindly to anyone they think is aligned with Olympia, either.

[ It goes both ways. ]

Probably not. If it's happening in one town, it's bound to be happening in the other. Not to mention that pride thing.

In my world, dragons are said to be the original fire benders and taught humans how to bend, so the stories go.

[Of course, she doubts her knows what she means by benders so she tacks on:]

Benders are people who can manipulate different elements - earth, fire, air or water. I'm from the Fire Nation so I'm more acquainted with fire benders.

[ It helps that Mai simply explains the concept of bending before 76 has to ask. Control over the elements, huh? And more than that, it seems that different nations are associated with different elements. ]

More acquainted, but not one yourself?

[ Control over fire seems like it would be both very powerful and very dangerous, though he appreciates that Mai doesn't call any of it "magic," at least. It makes it a little easier to swallow somehow. ]

None of my family are. It's not an uncommon thing though.

Is it something that usually passes through bloodlines?

Sort of? There's usually a better chance a person may be a bender if one of their parents or grandparents were. That doesn't mean you'll never find a bender in a largely nonbender family or vice versa.

To be honest, it's not something I've thought a lot about. People just are or aren't benders.

[ In that case, it sounds like it's at least partly based in genetics, but it sounds like it's something that wasn't questioned all that closely back in Mai's world. ]

Are you the only one awake from your world?

[ Or is there a chance he could see this bending firsthand? ]

There's a guy named Tarrlok here who's from my world... well, the future of it anyhow. He's a waterbender.

[ The name rings a bell, and 76 is silent for a few moments as he tries to place it. Eventually it comes to him. ]

He's the one who wanted to try and organize the refugees, wasn't he? Anything ever come of that?

[ 76 hadn't wanted to get anywhere near that idea, but there's nothing wrong with asking a second party. ]

I'm not sure. He spoke to me about it too and he seemed to have solid ideas for it. I'm not really interested yet.

Prefer to do things your own way?

I'm not much of a follower, let's just say that. Unless the leader is sensible.

[That said, she adds:]

Not that Tarrlok isn't but I don't see much worth in going off by ourselves just yet when all we know of this place is Olympia, Wyver and their love-hate relationship.

Kinda makes you wonder what else is out there, though, doesn't it?

[ There must be more to this planet, but so far there's been no way for them to access any other regions. ]

Hopefully it's more than just wilderness and invisible creatures.
