so turns out theres a few things about this place thats pretty similar to my home world
and a little blue birdy tells me todays my birthday [ lol it's funny because his phone is blue........ ]

now back home my family would normally throw me a party but theyre uh
theyre kinda busy right now [ you know. fighting for their lives in sleep-mode and all. ]
and its a little too last minute to throw anything together anyway
but that doesnt mean we cant enjoy a few party games right?? [ if you can't already tell, he is pumped. games are, like, the second best thing about parties. (second to presents and cake, of course.) ]

since were all kinda scattered i thought we could all play one over this network
that way everyone gets to play!
the games called 'never have i ever'
and all you gotta do is say something
SOMETHING HONEST
that youve never done or seen or heard or whatever
and everyone who that applies to has to respond to you with a story about it!

[ okay so he... modified the game a bit. normally it involves drinking, bUT WHY ALIENATE THOSE WHO CAN'T, AMIRITE............. and besides if there is no birthday cake to be shared, might as well go for the next best thing, right? embarrassing stories! ] ]

well before this whole storm-eating thing happened
my friends and i were trying to stop this evil alien empire from taking over our universe
it uh
it wasnt easy

[ in the rush and thrill of it all, it was easy to get caught up in things and forget... forget that every time they fought, they put their lives on the line. that not any one of them ever really knew if that next battle will be their last.

now, of course, they were past that. that particular hurdle, at least. who knows what these new universes have in store for them, but at least for now that particular worry isn't quite as immediate. ]

( well, that's something. who the hell lets teenagers fight an evil alien empire?? either there are some really awful adults in his world, or the war was so hard, there had to be some hardcore drafting. )

That does sound like quite a battle.
What was the evil alien empire trying to do? Why would it want to take over your universe?

[ "letting" them fight is a bit of a stretch. it implies there was a lot more choice in the matter than there initially had been.

but even if they could, lance doesn't think any of them would have chosen all that differently, in the end. ]

by the time my friends and i got involved
the empires been doing it for over ten thousand years

( even if she's a war orphan herself, and it's not a struggle she had to participate in, it doesn't make hearing about teenagers fighting any easier. )

Some evil has its reasons. It does't make it better, but I think it is easier to fight something that you understand. It becomes less frightening that way.
What you describe, that's a lot different. That's pure evil.
I should have guessed it was such if you hadn't already won them over with your charisma.

It certainly has to be more likely than randomly falling through the chair you're sitting on.
Or seeing a unicorn.

[ it's less his home that saddens him, and more the horrors that's befallen it. if he could, he'd fhink of nothing more than the warm beaches of his childhood, the fresh garlic knots you can buy right off the pier... his nieces and nephews that haven't yet understood the meaning of "game over." ]

considering all this, who knows what or who ill meet next

( and that's an important distinction, but it's not one that she's likely to pick up on in current circumstance. despite her good intentions she's never been the most empathetic person. being any more attuned to people probably would've gotten her killed. but it is--something. and something she'd understand. she's always thought of the cool, alpine country of her youth with fondness. )

Well, I think it's a safe bet to take that you won't see any unicorns.
Because what does a horse need with a horn on its head?
You're more likely to see something completely bizarre. Whatever this world's version of a platypus is.

lance has always been quite good at adjusting, though, so if he slips, he'll pick himself up just fine in no time. ]

Ah, I am thinking of his cousin, Hippocampus. He also other Etruscan cousins, like a fish-tailed lion, Leokampoi.
Or there are kelpie, who sometimes appear as fish-tailed horses. Other times they can appear as human as you or me.
