[ on camera is a man who doesn't seem very pleased with the current chaos of the recent bombing. a moment is given to take a drag of his cigarette between words, blowing a puff of smoke straight towards whoever is watching. ]

I need information on the fugitives. Don't care if you're best friends or you've crossed paths with them once. Backgrounds, real names, affiliations, common hangouts. Also addresses on where they live. Give me a scent to work with and they'll be found.

[ another inhale of nicotine before he smothers the embers on a nearby surface. he's still as displeased as five seconds ago. ]

Also don't really care if they're in deep with this Shady Fucker or just a matter of "wrong place, wrong time". They have questions to answer one way or another. Got a problem with that? Take a wild guess on how I feel.

You're right. Seems to me that the fastest way to information on the network as a whole is through the mules that carried out their bidding, though.

[Atsushi has mixed feelings on that - but they're tentatively positive. At least: more positive than before.]

That may be true, but if they'd rather not come forward, I can't blame them.

There are other options. Witnesses to those dealings back then; witnesses to the bombing itself. Making a bomb like that would presumably have required specific knowledge and resources, too...

[ not that he was intending on using that as a leg to stand on, because something like a title doesn't matter in a place like this. cat's out the bag now, however. ]

There's consequences to running and coming forward. It's pretty obvious which one I believe poses the greater risk on everyone, not just them.

[ a pause. ]

I'm willing to work with what's available. Do we know anything about the witnesses? For the bombing or the dealings.

I haven't had much of a chance to look into it yet, but I will.

While I wasn't anything as official as a sheriff, I did work for a detective agency.

[Admitting that is a little scary, like it's setting himself up for failure, but it only feels fair to share, after the sheriff did the same.]

I want to find out who did this, so they can be brought to justice - and so they can prove the innocence of the refugee fugitives, too.

Being a sheriff is just a glorified bouncer and an excuse to get into fights. Nothing's wrong with working for an agency.

[ another pause. a very, very brief one. ]

Just means you need to get off your ass and start looking into it.

[Nice or not, Atsushi doesn't even feel offended: he actually agrees. While he's never been anything close to the best detective in the agency, he does feel a responsibility to live up to his past employment. And if he can't solve any mysteries... he can at least capture any exposed criminals. He's pretty good at the fighty thing, himself.]

If you find any leads, I would appreciate it if you shared them with me. I have no intention of capturing any refugees, but any other suspects, I'll do my best to catch.

I realize that they're suspects. And some of them may indeed be guilty, but others are definitely not. [Does he have the balls to say it? In defense of Ana, hell yes he does:] That's what I am just saying.

So, we're willing to let the possible guilty ones slide because we might be worried we catch an innocent? It's not like they're walking to a guillotine, kid. Proving innocence shouldn't be that hard if that's what they are.

I believe people are meant to be innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around.

And even if some refugees are guilty, they're only the hired help. It would be more productive to track down the actual terrorists and interrogate them.

There's a reason suspects are held for questioning. If they're clear, they are free to go. It's not like I have the power to stamp "innocent" or "guilty" on any of them myself, anyway.

Alright, alright. I think we're running in circles about this. [ at least he's pointing it out now? ] I'll stick with being the asshole and look for everyone's buddies. You get to work on the terrorists. We'll meet in the middle and hopefully get somewhere.

[... Well... Atsushi may not agree as such, but he can't quite disagree when the sheriff is only following the law. While Atsushi has his own opinions, there's only so much he can do to defend them - at least: without turning into a self-centered brat. For all his faults, that's never been a weakness of his.

Agreeing to disagree isn't so bad, even if it feels a little frustrating, like he's lost by default.]

[ Bigby's used to others disagreeing with his opinion, so it doesn't quite upset him to find out a stranger that happens to think differently than himself. and that's fine. he can appreciate different mindsets, but that doesn't mean he will believe they are the correct ones.

besides, if Atsushi loses by agreeing to disagree, so does he. that's the fun with accepting a draw. ]

[Sarcasm, is it? Either way, Atsushi finds himself with no tolerance for it. This discussion was mostly a matter of principle, before; now, he's actually getting angry.

It scares him a little. He doesn't want to feel that way. He doesn't want to fight. The refugees are a family; that's what he's decided long ago.]

[ oh look, it's Bigby fucking up at conversing once he lets his guard down for two seconds again. when he notices that the sarcasm appears to go unnoticed, he growls and rolls his eyes. so much for that. ]

[If Bigby's at fault, so is Atsushi. The conversation has been an emotional roller-coaster, but he can't help it: this whole terrorism incident has ruined the illusion of a lovely new life that Atsushi has, for his own reasons, tried very hard to cling to. Not to mention that Ana is personally involved....]

[He's asking politely, but the tone in which he does so isn't exactly pleading. He does catch himself doing it, at least, and the moment the words have left his mouth, he glances aside, overly aware of that momentary spark of something almost like attitude.

He's just worried about Ana. Very, very worried.]

[ this kid's got some dependency issues or something. Bigby isn't a therapist and he doesn't plan on prying into his reasons for why he cares so much, but he does concede with a sigh and a hand running down his face. ]

I guess this should go without saying from the way you're reacting, but... you close to some of them? Any of them you know from before here, or...?

[ he can't imagine someone becoming so worried for another in such a short period of time. then again, this is Bigby. there's not even a lot of Fables from back home that would get him overly concerned, but there's still a small list of people that exist that can entice such feelings from him. ]

... Not from before, but... there is someone I met the very day we landed. She's a kind and caring person who would never do anything like this. Not on purpose.

[Realistically speaking? He doesn't know the first thing about Ana - but he knows what she did for him even when he told her not to, and the incredible kindness she showed him since. She's patted his head; she's squished his face. Maybe it wouldn't mean anything to anyone else, but it's made Atsushi feel more like a real person than he has in his entire life.]

She's always tried to help me, even when it wasn't strictly necessary. I have to do everything I can to help her now.
