Good evening.
[ The feed clicks to life to a modestly dressed (that is, modest in means, not necklines) but well-kept young woman, seated in the likely familiar mid-level chaos of refugee housing. The walls are not well-painted, and the quarters a bit close, but it's what they're all dealing with, or have recently, and Max is no exception. ]
Like the rest of you, I am finding myself starting over in this place — finding work, building a life. Given the nature of our presence here, displaced from our homes and our histories, it seems the only base of support many of us may have is each other.
So I wondered if those of you who have found your feet might share — what work have you found yourselves suited to here? How are you making your way in this world? Or how do you plan to, if those plans have not yet come to fruition?
And how does that compare to your ambitions? Is the position your hold now everything you had hoped for, [ unlikely, her tone suggests, but feel free to surprise her, ] or is there more that you would seek to accomplish? Perhaps there are others here who could lend their aid, or whose ambitions might align with your own.
[ Perhaps Max can help. c: ]

[ Levels of deduction that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would approve of. ]
[ Sticks and stones. ]
Pragmatism isn't a dirty word. But I'm sure you've heard plenty enough of those to realize the difference.
[ That seemingly indecent examination of her chest from before? That was Dazai trying to study her attire. Funny thing about clothing - it tends to be a dead giveaway for very specific time periods. A good examination is enough to give him a relative time frame for her origin, should it align with his Universe's timeline. For a good detective the way someone dresses, speaks and holds themselves is a delightful cheat-sheet that tends to reveal an entire back-story about someone's life.
Coincidentally - that's his profession. ]
You know, for a woman who makes her money on her back- [ He'd bet she's dabbled in more than a little theft, too. Max would definitely not be high born in less than modern eras and the pearls and gold baubles adorning her soar above the pay-grade of anyone below a plutocrat's wife. ] And out of the pockets of lords and ladies-
You're very idealistic, assuming the general populace is going to be far more decent than you've been in your life. [ Three guesses she's done more than her fair share of lying to patrons and lawmen alike, if not dabbled in outright deception and manipulation to survive. It's the nature of the trade. Of survival. ]
Or maybe that's just arrogance. [ He doesn't particularly care that she's not exactly Mother Theresa. Nor is Dazai out to shame or belittle Max. The issue here isn't her morality.
This is merely a theoretical discussion about her blatant hypocrisy and the nature of people - using Max as a prime example. ]
Most criminals suffer from it.
