( it's not been horribly long since Diana poked around the network, and surprise surprise, she's still ignoring the fact there is a voice and text function. she will look upon the faces of those she speaks to, tyvm!

she's dressed in the dark black of the city guard, her hair pinned up and a sparkling brooch at her cloak, though her fingers are already toying with it as she speaks. )

I see that our numbers have grown greater. My name is Diana of Themyscira, and I bid you all welcome, both faces old and new. If you need aide during your displacement, then I offer what knowledge I have. You need but ask.

( that said, it's not exactly why she's here, though her note is just as important with so many more that might need to learn how to protect themselves. )

It has come to my attention that there are many in our midst that know little in the way of defense. Or, perhaps not enough, in a world with so many dangers lingering just out of sight. It troubles me to think that there are those that may not know how to protect themselves, especially if they possess a desire to learn.

( which brings her to her purpose, an important one at that. Diana seems gifted at finding herself a purpose. )

I am an amazon, well trained in the art of war. Archery, swordplay, use of a shield, riding, hand to hand, more. If there are those that would learn, I would be happy to show what I know. It will not be simple, and the training will be difficult. Still, if you would learn, I will make you an amazon. This is more than a style of defense, it is a family. You will gain both if you learn from me.

( her piece said, Diana crosses her arms. )

[ A human holiday? ...That bit of curiosity aside, this presents some fun opportunities. ]

Well, it's absolutely obligatory. No human holiday is allowed to pass without a bit of violence. It's considered a bad omen, you see.

I'll keep that in mind before I accept any invitations.

Oh, you must. [ He looks perfectly earnest. ] It should break my heart if you found yourself getting bopped over the head by an overzealous partier. And what a lovely head it is, too.

[wondie]

Your concern is truly moving. ( though, she has to wonder. ) Do you imagine they observe such holidays here? It is a different place, after all.

[vorrutyer]

[ Cheerfully: ]

Oh, probably. After all, humans are humans, wretched beastly monsters all. [ Then, the question that actually interests him - ] If I may ask, my dear lady, what are you yourself? If not a human.

[wondie]

These people have different gods. It would be strange for them to follow the same customs.

( they'll just have to see, won't they? frankly Diana doesn't know many human celebrations, beyond a few she heard of since leaving Themyscira.

as for what sort of being she is, she thinks this is obvious considering her introduction, but she repeats anyway. )

Ah, forgive me.

[ He lowers his head in a bow. ]

I had assumed that was a nationality, not a species. [ He raises his head again. ] I must note, though - for someone who's not a human, you do look precisely like a human.

[ His private theory at the moment is that this lovely lady is a brainwashed pawn of some insane cult headed up by this "Zeus" character. The light of humanity stuff certainly does sound like the rhetoric of a fringe group. ]

Looking is not the same as being. Cats look quite close to lions, but you would not name them the same.

( is she the cat or the lion there... it is a mystery (no it is not.) )

Oh, I might. I'm monstrously bad at remembering Old Earth wildlife.

[wondie]

( that earns a laugh. )

You'll just have to discern the difference for yourself.

( though, now she's curious. ) Old Earth? Meaning you are from a newer one?

[vorrutyer]

Why, no, esteemed Amazon. I'm from Barrayar, which isn't Earth at all. [ He gives a little gesture of his hand, and explains - ] When we talk about Earth, we generally talk about it as it was before we began to venture into space versus how it is now. [ His smile goes a little twisted. ] Or - how it was, I suppose. Since it does not exactly exist any longer, does it.

[wondie]

How it was. Yes.

( her expression quiets at that reminder. though Diana desperately wants to believe that she can reverse all the destruction by finding Ares and stopping him once and for all...

with so many lives, worlds and existences destroyed, it is hard for even her to keep the faith. )

Perhaps how it will be again. I hope that is true, though I know that hope sounds naive.

[vorrutyer]

[ His response is breezy, blunt, and a little cruel. ]

Oh, yes. Extremely naive. Most likely it won't.

[wondie]

( god bless her foolish heart, she's not ready to believe that yet. )

If we all thought that way, it would certainly be absolute. I am not ready to believe it an impossibility.

[vorrutyer]

Ah, but that leaves your heart open to being crushed.

[ He spreads his hands casually. ]

I should think a warrior would want to protect her vulnerabilities, no?

Is hope a weakness to you?

( that's answering a question with a question, but it bears asking. )

[ His smile doesn't falter. ]

Hope is a weakness for everyone, dear Amazon.

[wondie]

My name is Diana. ( she may be an amazon, but that doesn't make it her entire identity. and as for hope being her weakness, she doesn't see it that way. )

Hope is strength. Without it we would be lost.
