Hello.

I am curious about the general knowledge of androids in this place and thought I would ask a few questions, if anyone has the time to answer.

1. Do androids exist in your world?
If so, what are they like? Do they have humanoid appearances, how do they behave, are they designed to emulate human responses, et cetera.
2. Have you interacted with an android?
If so, what was it like? Did you know they were an android? Were they able to successfully 'pass' for human?
3. If androids exist in your world, were there laws passed in relation to them, their uses or 'rights'?
What were these laws? Did you witness them being broken? What were the consequences?

And I have another question, not relating to androids. Regarding emotions –

4. Are there methods available to assist in regulating unpleasant or extreme emotional responses? Preferably with 100% success rates, though I am happy to discuss tools with less guaranteed outcomes or results.

Please respond at your convenience. Thank you for your time.

[This is a lot of questions and though Inara prefers to speak one on one with people, she's decided to reply with text for this one time.]

1. there are androids where I came from. They do look very much like humans but their behavior depends on how they were programmed.
2. I have not, though I have seen them.
3. No laws had been passed regarding them as far as I'm aware.
4. Have you tried meditation? I find that it helps a great deal, not 100% but enough that it helps.

My answer's no all around for the first three.

Though I guess I can take a stab at things and say I'm interacting with an android now, aren't I?

As for four.. I know a guy who wanted to keep absolute control who was called the 'Perfect Soldier' back in our world, and even he said there's nothing wrong with following your emotions or having emotions. Unpleasant and extreme are just part of life experience, no matter how much e may want to avoid them.

Androids aren't real, they're just in books and film.

You could always take a Xanax.

I think first you're going to have to define what you consider an android. Just so we're on the same page.

1. Yeah. It depends. Most of them are humanoid, but there's a lot to them that make it clear they're synthetic. Too many people with cybernetics running around. It'd get confusing.

2. I don't know. Probably. There's a lot of them on Contraxia, but I don't typically pay attention since they're just staff and they don't have anything on them.

3. Not directly. People get shiftier over illegal cybernetic experiments on living things than they do androids for some frickin' reason.

4. Alcohol.

Monsieur, you have not explained what an android is. Whatever they may be, I doubt the existence of them immediately, as I am man with a cynic’s outlook, but I should like to know what it is I’m doubting.

Regarding your final question, I find that wine assists in regulating unpleasant or extreme emotional responses.

[ Or it just makes things worse, but you know, this is his comment and he’s going to be himself!!! ]

However, success often varies.

[ The Turing Test? That's kinda like the Bladerunner thing, right, where you try to tell if someone is a robot or not? ]

Well the closest thing we have is things that make themselves look like humans. I don't know if you can say they were designed that way exactly? I think it was just a familiar shape they took.

[ The shape of their creator, after all. ]

I believe they are just machines with no feelings or desires of any sort. But, I'd never interacted with one before so I truly can't say.

It's really not all that hard. If you wish, I could show you how I meditate.

Can't someone reprogram you to be less sad?

I mean the hookers on Contraxia literally power down when they're done doing their business, so probably not. If they did, it'd be an issue. People in the general galaxy don't like things that shouldn't be able to think for themselves... Thinkin' for themselves.

[He is not bitter about this AT ALL.]

But if you can't drink, then I got nothing. That's typically my solution.

1. Only 2. They are mostly human-shaped? Vision has metal in his skin and Ultron was only made of metal. Vision can do things that I can't, but his mind and emotions aren't so different from mine.

2. Ultron killed my brother and destroyed my home. Vision saved me and now we're teammates. He's very kind, very gentle. A good friend. I hope he wakes up soon.

3. Not yet. But I would be surprised if no one tries.

4. You can try to distract yourself or change your focus but it isn't healthy to try to completely ignore them

[ He is definitely not familiar with those. He hasn’t even gotten to electric lights yet. ]

I am unfamiliar, and thus I remain cynical. Can you explain further, perhaps, and do something to ease my unabating doubts?

Why all the 'android' related questions?

[ 76 has a pretty good guess as to why, but he isn't going to play all his cards so soon. ]

Connor. Got it. My name is Duo.

It might seem that way I guess but living without.. you know, passions and all the things that make anything worth perusing just seems kind of .. empty. At least to me. Not everything is butterflies and rainbows but stifling what you’re feeling isn’t always the most fulfilling option.

I tried for a little while and it just... came out in a bad way in the end.

[Android, huh? If the world ain't getting wackier by the day.]

1. Only on celluloid, but I'd swear my fax machine had it in for me.
2. I'm supposing this is my first time. Please be gentle with me, I'm blushing like a bride!!
3. Maybe there would have been something like that down the line. There were an awful lot of paperbacks and TV shows dedicated to the robot uprising. You aren't pals with HAL 9000, are you?
4. I see someone already suggested alcohol and you said no, fair enough. That'd muck up your circuits something fierce. Sadly the only other cure for emotional fatigue I know is weed. You might be on your own pal, but welcome to the club! We're all raw nerves around here, don't get too glum about it. You're in good company.

I'm no expert on the topic, but I hear they dream of electric sheep.

Regarding emotions, let them out, baby. It's the only thing that won't just store it all up for later.
