I do feel somewhat guilty for never really asking him about his friends and acquaintances here.

We discussed some things, but to ask would have felt like prying...

[and they were both dancing around their own things. Linneus himself has things he would prefer not to reveal on a first meeting, and is just as careful about poking into others' affairs]
