[The feed flickers a few times as Inara pokes at her phone a few times. Finally it steadies and Inara shakes her head.]
Bàoqiàn. I'm sorry, I'm still attempting to get use to these communication devices.
[She settles back and offers a charming smile before briefly dipping her head.]
Nín hǎo? For those of you I've failed to meet, I'm Inara Serra and still relatively new here. [She draws in a deep breath before continuing on.] Now I know that there are a great deal of you came from Earth, and while I find that truly fascinating and would love to hear some of your stories concerning it, I'm interested in knowing just where everyone else comes from.
I ask because though my ancestors come from Earth, though, no one has lived on Earth for centuries. I was born and raised on a planet called Sihnon. I trained there as well but before coming here, I'd spent a good year traveling between the different planets and various moons of our system.
[She takes a small sip of her tea before giving a brief nod of her head. She might have borrowed a teapot and some cups.]
I can't offer much, but I've only just made a fresh pot of tea and I'd be willing to share it with anyone who wouldn't mind telling me about where they come from.
((OOC: hover over Chinese for translations))

It's lovely to make your acquaintance, Ms. Serra. My name is Diana Cavendish, and I'm from England on Earth. [Nobody's lived there for centuries? She's curious as to that story.]
I'm curious-- even though you're not from Earth, that, ah... that was Chinese you were speaking, wasn't it?

It's lovely to meet you as well, Miss Cavendish, or would you prefer I call you Diana? I would prefer if you would call me Inara...
[Though she doesn't mind the Ms part, she figures that things would just be easier if there was an informal tone here.]
It was... Where I come from, most people speak both English and I suppose our version of Mandarin. Some planets speak more of one of the two than the other but we're all taught both. England though.... I remember reading some about England in my studies when I was younger. You must miss it greatly.

That sounds remarkable-- it's not surprising to me that those were the two languages that primarily made it off Earth, per se; even when I'm from, they're far and away two of the most dominant tongues on the globe. I'm just... ah, I suppose it's just nice to hear that something from Earth continued into the future, even if it's only languages.
England was a nice enough place to have a childhood in, and had some places I'm quite fond of-- my school, my family's home, and the like. I'm sure missing our homes is something most of us have in common, though.

They were the two big super powers when it was decided that humanity would leave Earth. Over the centuries the two cultures have merged and well, I suppose it would be interesting to any who didn't grow up with it, but it's lovely in my opinion.
[She sighs softly and nods her head.]
I believe you're right, Diana. It's still hard to think that home is no longer there.

And that's correct! Diana was the Roman name of the Greek goddess Artemis, the chaste huntress. She was the goddess of the moon, animals and the forest, and the protector of girls and young women, particularly in childbirth. Which might be somewhat ironic, as she herself had sworn to never let any unrelated man lay a hand on her.
[Diana smiles.] I can't say I'm unhappy with my namesake.

[Her smile grows and she's glad she didn't mess up what little she knew about mythology.] Are these things you learned in school? About the ancient gods?

[The question about Akko, though, makes her pause.] Ah... thinking about it now, I'm not sure just how much of her oddness was culturally influenced versus her just being a unique person.
Also, entering magical society when you haven't been raised in it is likely a bigger culture shock than Japan to England.

[But her mother had always been busy and well, Inara had left home when she was only a girl of twelve.]
Uniqueness is something to be valued, I think. It's always been the unique ones who tend to change history for the best. [At least that was what she had experienced.]
Magical?

And yes, I'm a witch, as is my friend in question.
