Hello there! ( the image that appears is of a smiling blonde woman, healthy and bright looking, dressed now in pristine weight to present herself, projecting poise and elegance and friendly invitation to hear her out. her German Swiss accent is quite strong, though, so hopefully no-one is overly attached to their w's. ) I hope everyone is doing well this evening. I am coming onto the network to reach out to anyone I might not have been able to yet. My name is Angela Ziegler, and I am a doctor from Earth. Human, as you can see. ( a light, pleasant laugh and an even more pleasant smile ) You may also know me as Mercy. It's my agent name from when I was in service to a global peacekeeping organisation known as Overwatch.

I'm from the 21st century, so the treatment that I can offer you is science based ( a slight pause here as if she's considering one last time how to phrase this ) rather than magic based, but I have a good deal of practical experience with general medicine so there's almost nothing I haven't seen or dealt with. My expertise is in applied biotics, and I also have experience with gene therapy, prosthetics, and cybernetics, if there is anyone here who may need more specialised care. My qualifications also include emergency and trauma response so, if you ever find yourself wounded and in need of immediate attention, please do not hesitate to contact me. Think of me as personal 999 for refugees!

If you do come to me for any kind of care, I promise to do the best I can help you, while upholding all the oaths I've taken as a doctor to do no harm and to protect my patients. I'm not charging anything at this time.

And, if you'd like to humour me and help me to understand our group a bit better, I have a set of questions: do you believe you have a soul? What makes you think you do or don't have one? And is such a belief common where you're from? ( she doesn't mention religion, because it isn't strictly speaking a religious idea. she's known plenty of atheists and nay-theists who thought there was something beyond intelligence that made people paramount to other species. whether they called this unique internal animating light a soul or not, it didn't really matter. )

And, I guess that depends on what you mean by a "soul". We have empirical evidence that ghosts, or "spirits" exist, but whether it's what people think of as a "soul" or just a different manifestation of consciousness is still up for debate.

[ a pause ]

Personally? I think there's nothing out there that can't be explained by science.

[ It's his neighbor. She's been pretty kind to him and there's something about her that makes him want to trust her, but this is a really difficult question. His tone is pretty somber. ]

As long as there's someone to help.

( as trite as that may seem, the delivery is so straight faced it's hard to think that she doesn't believe it. )

Empirical evident of ghosts that can be supported by science? I hope it's more than a blurry shadow on an ancient camera or matrixing sounds on a recording device.

( but then she offers a tight smile. as much as it's nice to think what if she's in the same camp as him. )

[What's up, Doc Mom? Here's Junpei, skipping all that medical stuff he's already heard and heading straight for the soul question. He's actually given it serious thought before, which is probably a new concept when dealing with Junpei.]

A soul? ... Yeah, probably. Gotta be something. [He'll get to the other parts in a second, but...] What's, uh, what's up?

( by his tone she can tell this is a serious subject to him, so she'll treat it as such too, but for her part her voice remains steady and at ease. )

Oh... Both, I guess, but let's start with the survey?

[Then they can catch up! On the past, like, week or so. That's enough time to catch up.]

Ah, well, I am trying to understand how to treat my potential patients better. We all come from such diverse backgrounds it's hard to make assumptions, but getting a general sense for what to expect is always a good idea.

I also have something of a personal interest in what others think, and why.

[Oh yes, his fascinating adventures in learning to make pasta!! She'll be thrilled he's sure.]

What do souls have to do with medicine? Uh, no offense, but are they really related? If I break my arm, I think my soul would take it pretty well.

Global peacekeeping force, you say? [ you can almost here the scoff from the other side of the device. almost. ] I'm surprised I keep hearing that phrase. And every time from a different person, no less.

[ the talk of medicine doesn't interest him too much... it's certainly something to remember, but nothing too relevant to him. "science based rather than magic based"... unfortunately, that essentially means she wouldn't be able to do him much good. ]

Souls though, hm? A rather odd question coming from a woman of science. Why are you concerned with something so nebulous?

It's not souls themselves, but rather what the belief in them says about a person's outlook on life.

It's more relevant me because--well. ( a pause here, as she's about to bring up something rather dark, though it is just a fact of her life. ) Most of the care I have provided recently is urgent and emergency to those in a conflict zone. Depending on what they expect to happen, my treatment might have had to vary, regardless of my own views on the matter.

These others wouldn't happen to have been former Overwatch agents? ( there's a few of them awake, but she's not going to be specific because some of them want to remain anonymous. it is also possible that more are awake, she hasn't really been monitoring the stasis pods like she should. and, she hears that scoff. she can relate to that sentiment really, really well. )

I am interested in how the belief of them may alter the care I give to my patients. ( a slight pause, as this second part is actually a bit nebulous, but no less pertinent. ) And there are so many worlds from which we come. As a woman of science, it is of interest to me to see how many different ways there are to explain the common phenomenon of our consciousness.

Oh—yeah, right. I guess that'd be helpful to know... [Death is real and permanent, totally missed that one for a second there. He makes a face that's not quite a grimace like he's thinking about something else entirely, then shakes his head a little. Never mind.]

So are you writing this all down just in case...?

( She just writes it off as not being something to occur as obvious to him; it's really not something that comes up unless people are actually truly afraid for their life. The grimace seems to be the result of a reminder of his own mortality, which most people don't care to have. )

Is there something specific you'd like to go on record?

Wait, what? [He meant just to ask about whether or not she's going to keep this list updated, or if it's a list at all—but, ah. That throws him. Now he's thinking about his own mortality, in the uncomfortably permanent sense.]

I hadn't really thought about it until just now... Can I take a rain check on that one?

I never inquired into the specifics, though I believe I've heard the term. [ perhaps from that girl he spoke to on the first day? it hasn't been that long, but it already feels like an eternity since the pods fell from the sky. ] There are too many do-gooders running around to keep track of, I suppose. [ assuming everyone that calls themselves a "peacekeeper" is actually benevolent... something he knows probably isn't true.

Fair enough. [ he knows the soul exists... or at least, something that people would call the "soul"... otherwise he couldn't even be here. but that would involve explaining what he is, and that's not a conversation he really cares to have. ] It's a commonly held belief in the world I come from, though who knows whether or not it's true. Whether or not people have souls means little to me; if anything, believing in something like that just gets in the way.

( there's some matter-of-fact amusement in her voice, though it fades by the time she speaks again. the topic can bring on existential dread, so she doesn't want to come across as unconcerned or spurious in her attempts to help. )

I am not looking for specific answers, really. General and vague ones are fine. That's what a lot of philosophy is anyway. Something like this isn't meant to be logical.

Put me down for the side with souls, then. If I think of my own last rites, I'll let you know.

Ah, well. ( she sighs a bit. not so much out of disappointment, so much as how tired that second statement makes her feel. some of them may be benevolent, but that doesn't mean they don't cause plenty of problems. ) Let's hope it stays that way. I would prefer not to be awash in a sea of villainy.

( she'd pry, too, if he indicated there was something magical about him. the fact that real magic actually exists is still novel to her and something she, as a scientist, is trying to quantify and qualify into a thing she can understand. ) Gets in the way when you're doing what?

Ah, well, I would prefer not to have to say them. I will do what I can to ever prevent that from happening.

( even if he meant it as as joke, her promise is a heartfelt one. ) Oh, you know, settling into a routine on an alien planet. How are you, Junpei? Have you gotten a codename yet?

Oh... thanks. [As long as it doesn't involve needles, he's good. He's doing good enough, but codenames! Now that actually makes him perk up a little. You know, like a loser.]

What do you think of Star?

[ Oh! She's definitely heard that organisation name before.. Juvia tunes in partially because of that, and ends up tagging along for the majority of the ride until the very end. Most of it goes over her head but she's managed the gist of it when she's thought of a proper response. ]

And as for your questions.. Yes! [ Her enthusiasm is near tangible through the screen. ] Juvia does believe she has a soul. If I didn't, there is no way I would be able to love as strongly as I can!
