Where I'm from, our enemies would hunt us down and make us into weapons and jewelry. And while not every gem is born fully formed or sentient, it's a little weird to have someone trying to sell me a diamond bracelet n the street like it's nothing.

[But after some fiddling, Diamond switches the device from text to video so they can record themselves, smiling brightly and offering a little wave]

I know about the jewels here--back home, the ones that aren't fully formed are usually used in repair work for us. But it's still rather unpleasant.

There's only a little less than 30 of us. We live on a sort of island/beach and, as far as I know, aside from the fish, birds, bugs, and jellyfish, we're the only living things left on earth.

[too bad there isn't an aquamarine around anymore. probably. Maybe?? There might've been one at one point.]

Sensei says that thousands and thousands of years ago, there were a series of impact events, and the last one wiped out all life. Or whatever life was there was driven into the sea.

I'm afraid I don't really know how those like us came along. Sensei just found one of us one day, and others came after.

whoa so like impact events = meteors?? earth was destroyed by meteors thats pretty crazy and a little depressing i guess and somehow like life evolved from rocks (im sorry is that offensive to call you a rock should i call you something else)

Yes, I think so! I've only ever seen our small beach-island. But I suppose there's likely other land masses around somewhere. We've just never left and explored or anything... There wasn't really a need or desire too.

But it means that when this Storm thing destroyed everything, there wasn't much to really lose. Which I guess is a good thing, right?

There are fish and jellyfish and birds and insects too! But it's okay, rocks or gems--It's about the same thing, right? I don't mind either!

so what do gems do for fun or to live or anything like that

Well, when we're 'born,' Sensei educates us and gives us a role. Mostly we spend our time fighting against the moon people who try to take us away, but some have become completely devoted to perfecting other crafts too.

Red Beryl loves clothing design, so they're always making new outfits and improving on old ones. Alexandrite studies our enemies, Onyx creates all of our weapons. Rutile, our doctor, is always collecting plants and making new things to help us.

Also we play cards! Or make up games, collect flowers... But most of our days are patrols, and fighting if the Lunarians show up.

Oh, sorry! I keep forgetting there are things our worlds don't have in common. It's sort o weir to think about, you know?

The people hunting the gems that I mentioned earlier? They're from the moon. We call them Lunarians. They show up on sunny days more often than not and attack us.

I'm not really sure, actually. I might have known once upon a time but after a couple thousand years and parts chipping away, things get forgotten.

Oh, right. See, when gems lose pieces, sometimes if there's big pieces lost we lose the memories stored in those pieces. Someone I know lost their legs and lost all memories of some of our friends with it.

Yes, precisely. Though hands and fingers tend to be lost quite often, so important memories aren't usually stored there. I think. No one's really done research into it before.

I only know what death is in the definition of the word, but it's a foreign concept to me. So long as some pieces of us remain and so long as we find pieces that are compatible to rebuild us, we never truly cease to exist. We can always come back.

For us, it's like going to sleep for an unknowable length of time and then waking back up when we're fixed again.
