(Video) Jane Smith: One.

[Jane is a bit uneasy at first, and this can be spotted in the first moments of her video. Though, she fixes that quickly - she realizes that she is introducing herself for the first time to many, and that means presenting herself in a way she'd want.

She stares into the camera, takes a deep breath in, and releases it in a calm whisper of a breath.]

Hello. My name is Jane.

Jane Smith.

[A beat passes by - intros like this are not really her thing.]

I've become... somewhat acquainted with a decent handful of you all already. And because so many others are doing this, I suppose it would be fair for me to do the same.

[She peers down at her fidgety hands, before looking back up again.]

Um. [She purses her lips, then chuckles her next words.] I don't know what to say.

[She shakes it off. She's not nervous, just a bit awkward with these things.]

I, uh - I'm from Earth. I'm 30 years old, married. My husband is in a pod, though. Um. [She scratches her temple before adjusting herself and shrugging.]

So, yeah. That's all.

Hello, Jane. [Mantis recognizes the awkwardness and the fidgeting -- thought hers usually stems from anxiety.] I am Mantis. I am not from Earth, but I know someone from Earth.

[And... now what does she say? She presses her lips together, then smiles awkwardly.] It is nice to meet you.

[This look. Just give her a sec.]

[Jane shakes off her wide-eyed reaction to the appearance of this girl named Mantis. Will she get used to this?]

Yeah, hi. [Her smile is small and her nod is slight.] It's nice to meet you too, Mantis.

So... where are you from?

[No, you will never get used to it. Mantis has been on the receiving end of that look a few times since arriving and, so, patiently waits it out.]

I lived on Ego's planet for most of my life.

[She nods, trying to understand. And trying to be friendly too. Not that she isn't - she just normally doesn't bother.]

And what's that like?

Lonely, sometimes. It was only my master and I. The planet was beautiful, though. Perfection, perhaps.

I like to be pretty active. Yoga, bouldering, kick-boxing. Having a drink here and there. Do you drink?

( Have a nice smiling face to start out the response. ) Hello there, Ms Smith! My name is Angela Ziegler. I am from earth as well. I'm 37 and I am what they would called married to my job. We get along very well, my practise and I. ( A pleasant laugh at that. This feels a bit like a chat service on earth, she thinks. ) How are you finding your new home?

[The energy on this one catches Jane off-guard. Still, it's quite pleasant. She awkwardly nods and bobs her head as she tries to keep up with all this. She doesn't normally do these things, as she finds them to be a waste of her time.

But maybe, in this world, it has become a necessity.]

Hi--! Angela, nice to meet you.

Um, my new home is... guess it can be called a home. [She shrugs, finally relaxing a bit.] I can relate to getting along with the career-path though.

What is it you do? [~~Or did.~~]

( Sensing that awkwardness, Mercy does try to pace out her sentences and expressions clearly. Her accent she tries to keep toned down, and any fragments of German that might creep in, out. Otherwise she just speaks as herself, one woman displaced in time/space to another. )

Well, it is what we have for now, at least. If you can believe it, it's actually quieter here than what I had become used to. I hope you were lucky enough to get a roommate who understands common decency.

I am a doctor! And I will do my best to be so here. It might involve a bit of self-rebranding though since magic and sorcery are--well. Real. I'd say it's save to guess that's a bit of an adjustment for you as well? ( She laughs at that, aware that it's probably an understatement. She's only met one person so far from a version of Earth that is totally bonkers. )

Right... the roommate. Haven't met 'em yet. [She purses her lips.]

Yeah, [She says through a chuckle, her head tilting.] Definitely an adjustment. I, uh... I guess the shock of the landing didn't give me much time to take that little detail in.

[Her features shift, her body language expressing a bit more comfort.] But a doctor - that's great. And that re-branding; that'll be a part of my days here, as well.

I'm, uh, a bit of a fighter. [She shrugs. Guess you could say that.] And I met a woman who can lift over a hundred times her own weight, so.

Just smile and be friendly, and you're already off to a great start. Hopefully it will stay that way.

( A laugh at that, she eventually shrugs one of her shoulders. ) Well, one day at a time, right?

I don't think I've met this woman yet. She sounds like--an inspiration, to be honest. Is that the kind of rebranding you're interested in, Ms. Smith? Whatever fighter you may have been before, it seems like you'll be needed here. I wish it were otherwise, but I'm not impressed by even the basic security in this city.

One day at a time, indeed. [She smiles.]

[She tilts her head out of intrigue at that comment.] I've noticed that myself.

And, [she adjusts herself.] I was looking into steering myself in the direction of mercenary work, speaking of rebranding.

( A head tilt for a head tilt, as Angela considers the image of the other woman.

There's a hint of weary humour in her voice. ) Now, speaking of rebranding, what kind of brand of mercenary are speaking of? The murdering kind, or the protecting kind?

I think there is a difference.

Well met.

[He says that, but this kid's face is way too solemn and his voice is too serious for a teenage punk. Still, he does sound somewhat calm?]

Yusei. I'm also from Earth. Several of my friends...I've seen them in the pods.

[...]

At least...there is a chance for them to awaken, yes? [The smile on his face-it's hesitant and small, barely readable, but it's there.]

[She's going to mirror that smile of his. Though, her's holds the slightest hint of a friendly presence that can barely be spotted.]

Yeah. A chance.

[She looks down at her ring, but she doesn't let her insides seep through her outside - instead, she shrugs.] Or not. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

But, uh... anyway, it's nice to meet you, Yusei. [Her eyes search his features for a beat.] How old are you?

Mmn. We can only do our best until then, I think...

[He stops and listens to her next words.]

Eighteen.

[The answer is abrupt and to the point. It's almost odd compared to how he was close to waxing philosophical just a few moments before.]

[Her eyes widen for a moment at his answer.]

Eighteen. [She tilts her head.] I wouldn't have guessed.

[In response, his own eyes narrow somewhat.]

What do you mean by that?

[he's not being threatening, promise. Just surprised.]

You seem a little... experienced, not that I know you anyway.

[She gives a small shrug.] Interesting to see how many kids there are here.

Things can happen to children just as much as they can for adults.

[and now he just looks somewhat morose.]

...This place is proof enough, don't you think?

I know that, believe me. [She smirks.]

Just a bit odd to have that realization hit you, when it does.

[Not that she's ever given children much thought.]

It's not something people like to think about.

[One of the many ugly truths about any world, really. Yusei knows a lot about what people would do to keep those truths hidden...and what consequences that can have. Even if his world is gone...]

That kind of thing...it leads to underestimating stuff you shouldn't. Careful.

[Okay, maybe he's smiling a little bit, if not a little reluctantly. Is he trying to tease you?]

[He smiles, hey a familiar face! And hey - she's not that much older than him!]

Hi again Jane, we met before. I was wondering if you managed okay.

Uh. [He pauses to think about it for a moment.] Sorry about your husband.

[That's what you're supposed to say, right? He's a little uncertain about that, but practice makes perfect.]

[Jane smirks amusingly at this familiar face. Any other person may find comfort in seeing someone they have already been acquainted with a few days before - and she does, but it's more of a comforting amusement, if anything, at the familiarity.]

I managed. [At his remark, her smirk grows, somewhat, into a friendlier smile.]

How're you holding up, kid.

[Sure, sure, Jane finds him amusing for some reason he doesn't know. He can live with it, it's not the worst reaction anyone's ever had.]

Didn't we all.

[He snorts softly at the 'kid' again.]

I'm not a kid! [He protests, which doesn't exactly help his image.] I'm fine really. Nothing really going on in here, after all. [He knocks on his chest.] I've been to all kinds of new worlds, so this place is interesting enough. It's just weird that I can't leave.

[At that protest, she breathes out a bit of a chuckle. But at his comment, about having been to several new worlds? She tilts her head at that one, her eyes shifting as she searches him via the screen.]

You've been through something like this before?

Not like this. Not with the storm and everyone I know being a popsicle or whatever.

[It's not a terribly eloquent or sensitive thing to say, but it's the best way to describe it for him at the moment.]

In my job I used to travel from world to world, to gather information. Recon, you know? Just work stuff, I wish I had more time to play around. [He smiles a little.]

All the worlds were nice. Except Halloween Town, because they like to scare me. Jerks. [Some light grumbling follows.]

So if the worst thing that happens is showing up in a new place, it's not that bad.

[ In cuts a video response, sans preamble. ]

Any idea why you drew the short straw?

Jane Smith, huh?

[ He nods and waves hello. ]

Nice to meet you. I'm 9S. Sorry to hear about your husband. At least he's safe though!

[ As opposed to... whatever happened to people the Natha couldn't save. 9S has tried not to think about it much. ]
